Compressor Training Keeps Millwrights Skilled and Productive

Working on Compressor

Southern States Millwrights understand that our job is to keep a worksite operating smoothly and safely. We are trained, tested, and credentialed for work in oil refineries, chemical plants, gas pipelines, natural gas processing units and more.

Through the SSMRC’s compressor training program, technical skills are honed for productive performance in exploration, development, drilling, production, and decommissioning projects.

The Southern States Millwright Regional Council is home to one of North America’s most comprehensive compressor training programs.

At the Gulf Coast Millwright Training Center in Houston, a section of the 16,000 square feet of training space houses two reciprocating compressors. Based on a partnership between the SSMRC and Ingersoll Rand, the facility hosts a Four Stage HHE (Heavy Horizontal Electric) Top Loader compressor.

Reciprocal Compressor

Training

The 40-hour Advanced Reciprocal Compressor training class covers every level of compressors: Basic knowledge of compressors and how they work, disassembly and problem diagnosis, and reassembly to exact specifications. Before millwrights are cleared to take the advanced compressor course, they must display proficiency in the basic 40-hour Reciprocal Compressor Training Class.

Houston’s compressor equipment features three cylinders attached and one removed for training.

Training is designed for SSMRC millwrights who are responsible for the maintenance of reciprocating compressors. Instruction includes classroom instruction on theory and operation, as well as hands-on training, including:

  • bolting and torque
  • lubrication
  • maintenance intervals
  • start-up checklist
  • bearings
  • maintenance procedures for discharge and suction valves
  • unloaders
  • cylinders
  • pistons
  • disassembly
  • inspection
  • clearances
  • measuring
  • repair
  • reinstallation
  • compressor and motor alignment

Houston’s compressor equipment features three cylinders attached and one removed for training. A machined automotive flywheel and starter motor is attached to the equipment so that millwrights can train specifically on the crankshaft and pistons.

Once the unit is reassembled, millwrights evaluate their work and hones skills under the supervision of veteran industry experts.

As a result of our compressor training program, Southern States Millwrights are prepared to expertly install, construct, repair and maintain multi-milliondollar production and refinery equipment, such as stationary and industrial engines, compressors, and pumps.
